We are just a few months away from ice out, and you are likely already thinking about your trip with Loon Haunt. Below are a few tips to help with your trip preparation.

  1. Check that your passport, as well as anyone else in your group, is still valid when you cross the border this summer. If not, the time to renew is now. Even if your passport is set to expire a couple of months after you plan to cross the border, it is best to renew now to avoid any hassle with the border agents.
  2. Take a look at your Outdoors Card to make sure it is valid in 2025. An Outdoors Card is only valid for three years. More information about renewing your Outdoors Card as well as your fishing license can be found on the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources website.
  3. If you plan on arriving in Red Lake the day before your trip and want to stay in a hotel, make your reservations now. There are several hotels in Red Lake, and many of our guests stay at the Super 8 by Tim Horton’s. During peak fishing season many hotels are sold out on Friday and Saturday nights, so it is best to make your hotel reservations ASAP.
  4. Finally, take a look through your tackle box from last year. Set aside the lures that consistently caught fish last year, and plan to bring them again in 2025. More importantly, take a hard look at the lures that did not catch fish. Set those aside as well, and build your 2025 tackle box without them. Many of our guests say they only use a handful of lures during their trips. That extra space in your tackle box ensures you will not waste time untangling lures when you are out on the water.
