    This picture of Monroe Lake was taken today about 5 pm by Dave McLeod. The south end of Monroe is open water and the surrounding lakes are open but the main body of the lake still has ice.

    The picture is of our bay this morning. The ice is still reluctant to leave. Some of the small lakes have open water and we hope to get to Monroe and Unnamed by the end of this week.

    Do not be fooled by the open water in the background. We flew the airplane off the ice and landed in the river–the only open water around.

    This morning the low temperature at Red Lake was 30 below Fahrenheit. Our old thermometer indicates lower but with the wind chill it was rated at 44 below. Our pessimistic thermometer can provide a bit of a shock early in the morning, especially if you look at the large outside numbers…

    We went for a little drive on the ice and took a picture of this ice fishing hut. If you look closely there is a satellite television dish on the closest hut.
