    The ice is out at Unnamed Lake. We worked all day getting ready. The reef markers are in and the portage is cleared. The water is very high (within a couple inches of the top of the dock). Monroe Lake is still iced over but should be open in a couple of days.

    First, the good news. The small lake by Tim Horton’s was ice free yesterday morning. The lake by the hospital (Florin Lake) was also ice free. The ice is still melting in place (no wind). The bad news, last night it snowed and it continues to snow this morning. We expect a change to rain…

    Several operators have their airplanes in the river and are ready to go as soon as we get some open water. So far we have not had much wind so the ice is melting in place. As soon as we get a good wind many lakes will open up.

    It is time to get the airplane off the ice. The wind was strong yesterday, so this morning we added fuel and took off from the ice and landed in the river. Our first guests arrive May 23, so we should be fine with ice out.

    We are back in Red Lake and the snow has started melting. Our aircraft is ready to go as the overhauled engine has been installed.  Now, we wait.

    The start of another year. Already we have had 30 consecutive days of  below zero temperatures.  When the temperature does warm up it snows. The old snow blower is getting regular workouts.     Scott and Duke, our last guests are in camp. Louise and Bill are getting things ready for winter. At Poirier Lake and the other outposts that means carrying firewood.

    Paul N. who has fished Unnamed Lake every third year in late August for the past 30 years, brought a group this year that managed to land a 42 inch northern and a 28 inch walleye.
