January 1/23 Welcome to what
we hope will be a great year. No travel
restrictions, no vaccine requirements.
Scarlett is now a little over one year old. |

January 16/23
We are still experiencing a very mild winter so far
here in Red Lake. Just a reminder that our
annual news letter is available online. |
Our
annual newsletter Tremolo 22 |
January 29/23 Up to
now we have had a very warm winter. Today we are
back to the normal 20 below. The good news is we
have sunshine which is great news for our neighbors
who rely on solar panels for electricity. We
have had nothing but heavy clouds for weeks. |
February 15/23 We
have had enough cold weather so the ice roads
throughout the north are in full swing. Photo at
right our vehicle on the ice in front of the Superior
water base. The ice here would be about 3 feet
thick. |
March 15/23 The
good news is there is a web cam for Howey Bay. Everyone can now watch the ice melt in the spring and the airplanes in the summer. |
Howey Bay web cam link click here. |
April 15/23 The
annual photo of our bay. |
April 26/23 Our
airplane is on the ice and ready to go for the 2023
season. |
May 1/23 We flew the airplane
off the ice and landed in the river. The
smoothest ice takeoff ever. The winds were 20 knots
right on the nose. |
May 10/23 The ice is almost gone
from the lake in front of our bay. This ice
should be gone in the next couple of days. When
this ice clears we will bring the airplane to our
dock. Monroe and Unnamed should be ice free and
we will start getting them ready.
Afternoon update. The ice is gone and the
airplane is at our dock. |
May 13/23 Ryan and Bill flew to
Goose Lake today. The ice is all gone.
Everything is fine at Camp and we look forward to the
first fishermen May 28 |
May 14/23 Monroe Lake is ready
for the first guests arriving on Friday. |
May 16/23 Unnamed Lake is now
ready for the first guests. |
May 19/23 Eric and Renee the
first guests of the season are in for a fantastic week
at Monroe Lake. |
May 27/23 Would you believe the
first fish Bob caught at Poirier this week was a 28
inch Walleye. |
No photo taken which begs the question Did
it really happen. |
May 31/23 Jason wants everyone
to know that the Perch are really biting in North Bay. |
June 5/23 The "Loon Haunt hats
everywhere" project continues with Terry and Brenda on
a ferry from Scotland to Ireland. |
June 8/23 New solar panels,
charge controllers and Inverters installed at Monroe
and Unnamed. Now all locations have Inverters
for CPAP machines and charging of cell
phones/cameras. Poirier and Whitelaw will get
new solar panels soon. |
June 15/23 Fishing has been
fantastic at all locations. Pictures of big fish
have been promised. |
June 22/23 As usual we can
count on Debbie to get a big fish and take the best
pictures. |
July 1/23 We should have posted
something earlier but we see very little smoke from
fires here. Occasionally we are downwind of a
far off fire and we get a little smoke but it appears
most of the smoke from the big fires in Alberta is
going to the USA. |
July 9/23 Ryan, Shawn and Bill
went to Poirier to install the new solar panels, the
charge controller and to build a new boat ramp.
With these panels running the generator should be
totally unnecessary |
July 12/23 Ryan is building a
new shower house to help with the bathroom congestion
in the big cabins during the morning rush. |
July 15/23 The floor is down for
the new shower building. Fishing continues
to be great on the Wall. |
July 18/23 In the continuing
saga of where will the Loon Haunt hat appear
next. Check out Jon and Kathy in Africa. |
July 28/23 The walls are going up |
August 1/23 The ridge pole and
rafters are up. Now sheeting with plywood |
August 4/23 The roofing is done |
August 7/23 Ryan and Shaun cut
planks with the chain saw mill and then finished them
with the planer. Shaun then cut the planks into
triangles to fill the spaces between the logs. |
August 10/23 Sunrise at the
Superior Airways base in Red Lake. |
August 13/23 This year has seen
the lowest water level on the Berens River in the 45
years we have been here. This follows the
highest water level ever in 2022 |
August 16/23 It would
appear that we have a new group of eagles at Goose
Lake and they are not familiar with the usual
routine. Roger managed to find one that was
hungry enough to pick up a dead fish. |
August 18/23 The rice machine is
ready to go |
August 20/23 The first load of
rice for the season. This is 6 days earlier than
our record early rice pick. |
August 25/23 All of our
efforts are now focused on the rice crop. So far
we have shipped 6000 pounds. |
September 2-3 Ryan and Eliza
took part in the annual Red Lake Fall Classic Walleye
Tournament. They finished in the top 35 of 131
boats. There were a lot of big Walleye caught
this year. Eliza caught this nice Northern while
fishing for Walleye. |
September 6/23 The latest
pictures from Tim are just in. August 27-
September 3 at Unnamed Lake. Lots of great
Northern Pike |
September 15/23 The record low
water at Goose Lake means we have a huge beach. |
September 23/23 The record low
water also means a record rice crop. The last
load of the 15,000 pounds harvested this fall. |
October 6/23 We shut down the camp at Goose Lake and moved to town. All the outposts are done except for Unnamed Lake. The load to town included 90 pounds of green tomatoes. Our tomatoes were late but they were delicious. |
The
Tomato Jungle |
October 8/23 We flew to Unnamed Lake and completed the shut down there. We even managed to cut and split the pile of wood in front of the cabin. |
