January 2/21 Welcome
to a new year. Ryan and Eliza started the year
off right by going ice fishing on Lake of the Woods. |
|
|||||||
January 3/21 Bill & Louise, Happy New Year from Texas. Fishing is still strong on Lake Travis and the bass are feeding as water temps hover around 60 degrees. Hope to see you in a few months. FTim |
|
|||||||
January 10/21 We
are having a very different winter so far this
year. It is almost like a Minneapolis
winter. The low overnight is about 20F. The high
during the day is about 28F. The sun is shining
this morning but mostly we have low overcast but not
much snow. Photo at right is a 46.5 inch northern at Monroe Lake. |
|
|||||||
January 19/21 The temperatures
have dropped a bit here. We are now seeing a
couple of degrees below zero at night. The
people trying to build winter roads will be happy. Photo at right is our friend Ken. We still miss him. |
|
|||||||
January 25/21 Winter arrived in
Red Lake this morning. |
|
|||||||
January 31/21 Well the old
snowblower finally gave up. I decided to replace
the motor with a Honda engine. Honda makes a
direct replacement for the 5 hp. Briggs and
Stratton engine. We did the switch on the log
splitter several years ago and it worked great.
The problem with the snowblower is the engine is so
old it is quite different. The base is a
different size so the bolt pattern is different.
The drive shaft is an inch higher and the shaft
diameter is larger than the Honda replacement.
See the necessary modifications in the photo. |
It was necessary to raise the engine up one inch and make a new bracket to hold the belt guard. I also purchased a new 3/4 by 3 inch double pulley to fit the Honda drive shaft. The new set up works great. |
|||||||
February 3/21 Our aircraft is in
the hanger for regular maintenance. We are back
to warm weather (just below freezing). The
forecast is calling for 6 to 8 inches of snow starting
this evening and continuing to Friday morning. |
|
|||||||
February 8/21 The snow missed
us. We got only about an inch. The weather
has turned really cold. The forecast is ten
below the warmest during the day for a week and then a
week of zero for the warmest each day. 20 to 30
Below at night. |
|
|||||||
February 11/21 It is still cold
but the good news is our Starlink satellite internet
service is up and running. This is the
system we plan to have at camp in the future.
The speed and bandwidth are just what we need.
Yes, that tiny dish will do it all. Thank you
Elon Musk. |
|
|||||||
February 16/21 We still have no information on a possible opening of the border. We feel if it opens people will need some combination of negative test and or vaccination.. The possible problem to opening may be the lack of vaccinations done in Canada. (Canada may have to keep visitors out because the Canadian government dropped the ball) |
If and when we get any information we
will post it here. Thanks Bill |

February 17/21 This just
in from NOTO. |
Clarification on the
Canada-US Border
We have received quite a few e-mails from
operators who have seen the news on the new
requirements for non-essential travelers coming to
Canada through a land border crossing. Upon
seeking further clarification from CBSA on this
announcement, NOTO has learned the following:
In the case of the new travel
restrictions/requirements, non-essential travelers
that may be permitted to enter Canada via a land
border crossing has not changed. This is a list of
non-essential travelers that may be permitted to
enter:
CBSA has made it clear that any American
currently seeking entry to Canada for
non-essential purposes (i.e. leisure, recreation,
weddings, visits, upkeep of property, etc.) will
be turned away immediately, regardless if they
have proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken
within 72 hours and/or a vaccine card.
The Federal Government has not yet announced
whether or not the border closure will be extended
beyond February 21st, 2021. We anticipate the
closure will be extended and the announcement to
come within the next few days. As soon as we
receive any information on the border, we will
advise the industry.
|
|||||||
February 27/2021 The latest news
about the border. Once again let me reiterate. We are holding your deposits to use when the border opens or to refund to you. No one will lose any money. |
Canada-US
Border Closure & International Travel
Restrictions Update
The Canada-US
Border will remain closed until March 21st,
with possibility of extension. All non-essential
travel will be turned away from all land border
crossings, regardless if the individual has a
negative COVID-19 test or proof of vaccination at
this time. CBSA and Minister Blair have also
confirmed that all international travel
restrictions (testing and quarantine requirements)
will remain in place until April 31st, 2021, with
possibility of extension.

March 4/21 The photo at right is
Oliver ice fishing. Oliver is the great grandson
of my sister Kelly from Coppen's Resort east of Fort
Frances at Bear's Pass on Rainy Lake. The
Coppen family has a long history on Rainy Lake.
During WW2 when gasoline was rationed.
Oliver's great, great, great grandparents fitted
their boat with lee boards and sails so they could
travel on Rainy Lake while conserving
fuel. Oliver's father Eric continues
this Rainy Lake tradition as a fishing Guide. Oliver's great, great, great grandfather had his picture in the Fort Frances Times about 80 years ago when he caught a Bass at the 7 mile bridge, a very rare event at the time. |

March 15/20 Still not much
happening in Red Lake other than melting
snow. Photo at right from Ron I will
save the photo of Dave for a later post.Here are pictures of me and Dave with walleyes we caught last fall at Dave’s lake in MO. We really hope that we can get to Goose in 2021! |
|
|||||||
March 22/21 We have had some
unseasonably warm weather. Most of the snow has
melted and the lake is mostly glare ice with puddles
in the afternoon. Our airplane is on the ice and
ready to go. The border closure has been extended to April 21 but it will continue to be extended unless there are some serious changes in the numbers. |
|
|||||||
March 24/21 An update on
what is happening with Covid-19 here in Canada.
Louise and I (over 70) are still waiting to get
an appointment for our first shot of the
vaccine. The article from McLean's Magazine at
right says it best. |
On Monday, Alberta’s health minister, Tyler Shandro, said that the province would not be moving to a more relaxed Step 3 in its reopening plan. That’s because hospitalizations in the province have not only plateaued in recent weeks—just below the 300-bed cutoff—but are expected to again cross above that line in coming days as variants of concern (VOCs) cause a surge in new cases, including another 456 on Monday. “There will be no easing of any restrictions at this time,” Shandro said. “This is the safe move; it’s the smart move to make for our province right now, and it’s absolutely necessary to help us avoid a third wave that would take more lives and once again put more pressure on the hospital system.” That same day, 33 COVID-19 patients
were admitted to intensive care units in Ontario, the
highest daily admission count since the peak of the
second wave, according
to Dr. Irfan Dhalla, a
vice-president at Unity Health in Toronto. Even more
worrying is the fact that the number of COVID-19
patients currently in Ontario ICUs is only
down 12
per cent from that same peak, meaning
any new patients are being admitted to units still
straining to deal with a high patient load. |
|||||||
April 6/21 Well we (Bill and
Louise) will get our first Covid vaccination
shots tomorrow but we will not get our second shot
until July 28. We just started a 28 day lock
down here in Ontario. It is not looking very
good for a season this year. The situation is so serious that Canada is about to exceed the United States for having more cases per capita. And the U.S. Centers for Disease Control just raised its travel warning for Canada to “very high,” stating that “because of the current situation in Canada even fully vaccinated travelers may be at risk for getting and spreading COVID-19 variants and should avoid all travel to Canada.” |
|
|||||||
April 11/21 Hello Bill and Louise (and Ryan), I hope this email finds you well
and you are feeling well after your first COVID
vaccination. We are all hoping that things slowly
return to the “new” normal, although as your
newsletter states, for the short term, it certainly
doesn’t look good. But 2022 MUST be better! That being
said, our group of four would like to make a
reservation now for our customary week of August
28-September 4, 2022 at Unnamed Lake. If this suits
your schedule, I can get our deposit check in the mail
promptly. This will be my 39th
“anniversary” of my first trip to Unnamed with you,
and Marty’s 38th. Where have the years
gone? Thank you very much, and take care! Paul |
|
|||||||
April 15/21 Once again it is
time for our annual spring photo. Full
disclosure, for the 2 weeks preceding this photo all
of the snow was gone. We had a couple of days of
snow showers which dropped about 3 inches of
snow. This snow cover will delay the melting of
the ice. |
|
|||||||
April 30/21 The weather cannot
make up its mind. We are teased with a warm day
every now and then between days of just plain
cold. Our bay has melted out but the main lake
will probably last another week depending on sun, wind
and rain. |
|
|||||||
May 5/21 The ice is gone from
Red Lake and we brought the airplane home
yesterday. We will probably go to camp at the
end of May just in time for the nice weather. |
|
|||||||
May 18/21 The time has come to
talk about what concerns us all the most. THE
BORDER We had planned to give a rather pessimistic outlook here because of the vaccine shortage in Canada. Then we read this article at right. At this point we are a little optimistic about a season possibly starting some time in July. We have unfortunately had to cancel May and June. There are ongoing discussions between U.S. and Canadian officials and we cannot imagine any scenario where unvaccinated people will be allowed to cross the border in either direction. Please get the shots and come fishing. We have missed you.
|
Canada is about to surpass the United States—likely on Thursday—when it comes to the percentage of population with first doses. Canada has given first doses to 44.7 per cent of its population, as of May 16. In the United States, it’s 47.3 per cent. First doses is an important metric, for not only do first doses slow the spread of COVID-19 within communities but they are “a sign of people’s willingness to get vaccinated,” says Trevor Tombe, an associate professor of economics at the University of Calgary who provides daily updates on Canada’s vaccine progress on his Twitter feed as well as his GitHub page. “You can’t get your second shot unless you’ve got your first. And so measuring how many people are willing to get their first shot tells us the state of demand for vaccines in Canada.” This ramp-up in Canada’s vaccine roll out has been a long time coming. On March 1, vaccine deliveries were so small that Canada wasn’t on pace to reach 75 per cent of its population having first doses until Nov. 24, 2022. Then, vaccine supply accelerated in April and May. Now, at our current pace, Tombe’s model suggests that Canada should reach 75 per cent by June 19. In addition, 75 per cent of all eligible Canadians 12 and up could have second doses by the second week in August. |
|||||||
May 24/21Hi Bill, Louise & Ryan, We do hope to see you in August. But just in case, Dave and I built a floating dock and put it on Brad’s big pond. Brad dubbed it “Canada South.” Now in can launch my boat, then step into it from the dock instead of the gymnastics we used to go through. Also much easier for the grandkids. |
|
|||||||
May 26/21 Message from Frank W Having this permanently on my wall at work does not help productivity. |
|
|||||||
May 30/21 We took a short flight
to check out the Monroe Lake Outpost
camp. The grass and brush will need
cutting but everything else is just fine. |
|
|||||||
June 5/21 Louise and Bill
arrived at Goose Lake this morning. We are
proceeding on the assumption that we will have a
season at some point this year. The Covid
experts that advise the government have come up with
the recommendations at right for crossing the border
into Canada. When the border opens we will be
ready. Keep checking here for updates. |
|
|||||||
June 6/21 A look at Monroe
Lake after some cleanup. |
|
|||||||
June 7/21 The floating dock is
back. |
|
|||||||
June 8/21 We are mass sending
the email at right to everyone we can think of. |
HI All This will be a mass email for anyone with interest in a trip this season. At this point we believe the border will open to fully vaccinated travelers from the US by August possibly a little earlier. We would like you all to know we have space available in August/September and we are taking reservations. No deposit necessary at this stage. We would like deposits as soon as we get the word on border opening. If the border opens for July we will let you all know if you want a July trip. Please email us if you are interested. Thanks Bill |
|||||||
June 11/21 Today marks day 3 of
nasty, cold, windy and rainy weather. We had an
inch and a quarter of rain which we needed. As
you can see the reef markers are not in yet. We
only have one boat ready to go but we can be fully
operational with a few days notice. |
|
|||||||
June 14/21 We are still here
getting things ready. The Lady Slippers are
doing great. |
|
|||||||
June 15/21 We flew to town today
to get parts, groceries and our second
vaccination. In 2 weeks we will be ready to
go. Photo at right. The Smithson Shore Lunch Shack doubles as a rain proof shop to make new window sills. |
|
|||||||
June 18/21 The weather has
turned cold and will remain so for the next few
days. The reef markers are all repainted and
ready to go. |
|
|||||||
June 21/21 We started this
spring with a water leak. We simply had to wait
until a puddle formed at the surface to find it.
Once located it was a simple task to make a repair. |
|
|||||||
June 23/21 Louise has been very
busy with the weed eater. It is a STIHL FS38. (a
fantastic machine). As you can see she has
cleared a spot in front where we can land a helicopter
if necessary. |
|
|||||||
June 25/21 A view of the service
building. In the center of the photo is a large
yellow barrel. This is actually a 55 gallon drum. Can
you guess what the yellow barrel is for? First
person to email with the correct answer gets a free
shirt in 2022. |
|
|||||||
June 27/21 A perfect day
today. It will be a little warm this afternoon
but still OK. As you can see the water level is
about normal with the floating dock even with the
fixed dock. |
|
|||||||
June 28/21 Message from Tim For empty cans. On a side note, our group just finished a trip to northern Wisconsin. Long-time Loon Haunt fisherman Graham Page landed this musky on a top water. Tim |
|
|||||||
June 29 guess from Mike Still thinking about this, Bill. The yellow color somehow denotes “hazardous material” inside, would I be correct on that? |
|
|||||||
July 1/21 Well James Robinson
came close enough when he thought the yellow barrel
was a marker for Gas Can Rock. It will actually
be filled with water and mounted on the rock in the
middle of the lake that normally has a small yellow
marker. This barrel should be visible from most
of the main lake. When the water is high the
entire rock is submerged and the barrel .will appear
to be standing on the water. |
Louise sometimes refers to this rock as Sid's rock. My father found this rock the hard way in our first season 1978. The photo is taken facing north. The seagull rocks are in the background. |
|||||||
July 2/21 We used to call it
Seagull rock but it looks like we may have to change
it to Pelican rock. |
|
|||||||
July 4/21 Happy Birthday U.S.A. Guess who's back. |
|
|||||||
July 6/21 We have been without
our camp phone, 807-773-5564, since we arrived at camp
and we will be without it for the rest of the
season. We can be reached on our cell phone,
807-735-2400. Our cell phone works through our
satellite internet. If you call we can hear you
perfectly but you may have trouble hearing us.
Just go ahead and let us know what we can do to help
you. You can also text us at 807-735-2400 or
email fishing@loonhaunt.com |
|
|||||||
July 10/21 If Covid and the
border wasn't enough, we are now having serious
problems with forest fires. We have fires to the
north, east and west. We are not threatened yet
but we have serious smoke every day. If the
winds are light we have smoke but the fires don't move
much. If we have strong winds the smoke clears
out but the fires move rapidly. |
|
|||||||
July 11/21 Message and picture
from Ron Took grandson Owen to a nearby pond and fished off the dock. He caught 30 sunfish in about 2 hours. The hat he’s wearing is from 2001, nine years older than he is! |
|
|||||||
July 15/21 The latest news on
the border. As if the border was
not enough of a problem we are in serious need of rain
and lots of it. At Goose Lake we have 6 pumps set up
with sprinklers on each building and we have cut down
the trees close to the cabins. The fire is still
about 7 miles west of us. A forest fire has burned all around Monroe Lake but at this time the cabin on the island is still untouched. So if Tim in Texas would stop hogging all the rain and send it to the central US and Canada we would all appreciate it. We are hoping for a possible opening by Saturday August 14. But of course politicians are not considerate of tourist operators and they will probably choose something mid week. When the border opens we will be open and ready for fishermen. |
Fully vaccinated Americans could be allowed into Canada by mid-August, Trudeau saysTarget based on 'current positive path' of COVID-19 vaccinations, PM tells premiersCanada is getting ready to welcome the world again, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau quietly indicated late Thursday as his office disclosed a target of mid-August for when the border might reopen for fully vaccinated Americans. And if the current vaccination rate remains on its upward trajectory, fully vaccinated travelers from around the world could begin arriving by early September, Trudeau said during a COVID-19 status update with Canada's premiers. The news was quietly disclosed in the final paragraphs of a readout from the Prime Minister's Office — a tactical show of modesty, perhaps, in a national capital where the scent of a looming federal election is in the air. "The prime minister noted that, if our current positive path of vaccination rate and public health conditions continue, Canada would be in a position to welcome fully vaccinated travelers from all countries by early September," the readout says. "He noted the ongoing discussions with the United States on reopening plans, and indicated that we could expect to start allowing fully vaccinated U.S. citizens and permanent residents into Canada as of mid-August for non-essential travel." |
|||||||
July 16/21 Today we portaged
over to Nechigona Lake and hauled the boats down from
winter storage (in the bush). We anchored 2
boats out in the channel, inverted one boat in the
water near shore and pushed the ramp well out so they
would not get damaged by fire. |
|
|||||||
July 17/21 Check out this short
video of how we protect the cabins from forest fire. https://youtu.be/8oG7Bv0HhNI |
|
|||||||
July 19/21 Finally, the border
will open for fishermen on August 9. You must be fully vaccinated and have proof of vaccination. You must be tested within 72 hours of arriving at the border. You must use the ArriveCan app. see details at https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/coronavirus-disease-covid-19/arrivecan.html |
We have space available. Please spread
the word. We are open for business after August
9 The ArriveCan app gives you the opportunity to answer all of the questions before arriving at the border. You can print out an approval or have it on your phone when you get to the border and the process is greatly simplified. For the latest updates on what is required to cross the border and come fishing. Please check out http://www.loonhaunt.com/news/covid.html.html |
|||||||
July 22/21 A couple of days of
cooler temperatures provided a great chance to get all
the reef markers out. Last night we had some
rain and more is forecast for Friday. The fires
that threatened us here at Goose Lake are not a
problem right now. Things have also settled down
by Monroe and Unnamed (not much left to burn). |
|
|||||||
July 24/21 Smokey and windy
today but the smoke is from fires a long way
away. Nothing burning close to any of our camps
right now. We portaged over to Nechigona Lake
and got the ramp and boats back into position for
fishermen arriving August 15. We need Ryan to
portage the motors. He will be here in early
August. First guests arrive August 11. We have space available for more guests. IF you get the go fishing urge please email us. |
|
|||||||
July 30/21 Louise and Bill flew
to Monroe Lake yesterday to start getting ready for
the first guests in a couple of weeks. Quite
windy and the fires started making serious
smoke. This morning we received half and inch of
rain and more is expected later today. |
|
|||||||
July 31/21 Good news. We
received 9/10 of an inch of rain in the past 24
hours. This along with cooler temperatures
pretty well assures us of no more fire problems. |
|
|||||||
August 1/21 Before everyone gets
too carried away about the damage caused by a forest
fire. At right is a picture of the shoreline of
Monroe across from the cabin. As you can see
there is still a lot of green left and more will come
each year. A fire is not the end it is the
beginning. That old bush that people love
is the result of a fire within the last 100
years. The available firewood will last for many
years. |
|
|||||||
August 6/21 Ryan is back and
caught the first fish. Finally a bit of good
news. The Canada Border Service Agents have
settled their dispute with the Canadian government and
there will be no work slow down at the border. |
|
|||||||
August 7/21 Ryan and Eliza
took the motors and all the assorted equipment over
the portage for the Nechigona boats. |
|
|||||||
August 8/21 Ryan and Eliza
retrieved the first load of minnows for the season. |
|
|||||||
August 15/22 We are now getting
into the swing of things. We have had several
groups cross the border and the line ups are
gone. The process is working. Please check
out http://www.loonhaunt.com/covid.html
for the latest information on procedures. |

introduced a great many people to fishing at Goose
Lake. Six people (five total new guys) fished below Whitedog falls today. They left camp just after 9 and returned just after 4. One boat with 2 people caught 175 fish. When they get home and regale their friends with stories of their adventure they will quickly be branded total BSers. |
|
|||||||
August 29/21 Scott D. and Scott
S. fished Unnamed Lake August 22-29. Scott D in
one day caught 10 Northern over 30 inches. The
biggest was 40 inches. The best spot was the bay
behind the cabin. Each of them caught a 40 incher. |

|
|||||||
September 19/21 In the past
there were only a few people who knew about the
fantastic fishing we have in August and
September. With the shortened season this year
there is now a whole group of fishermen who now know
about the great late season Walleye and Northern
fishing we offer. If you missed it please check
out the photo gallery. http://www/loonhaunt.com/photos21/2021.html |

September 25/21 The last group
of fishermen at Goose Lake has left. We got some
more replacement box springs in on the last
flight. We also shipped the last of the wild
rice to town. |
|
|||||||
October 5/21 The moose hunters
left on Saturday October 2 (we worked our butts off
but no moose). We left on Sunday October 3 after
preparing the camp for winter. Ryan headed home
to Minnesota and on Monday we headed west to spend
time with family in British Columbia. We wish to
express our thanks to all the people who jumped
through all the hoops to join us this season. We
really appreciate the extra effort you put
forth. Thank you from the Loon Haunt crew. |
