Jan 3/19 Ryan is at
the All Canada show in Milwaukee. Please stop by to visit with him. He will be there until Sunday. |

to the show if you print this coupon and present it
when you purchase a ticket |

January 5/19 We just got back
from watching the gold medal game in the World Junior
Hockey tournament in Vancouver. The Finnish team
managed to beat the US team with a goal late in the
third period. It was a great game and well
played by both teams. Our whole family was
together for Christmas here in British Columbia.
The photo at right was taken at one of the games
earlier in the week. (Bill, Cam and Scott) |
|
||||
January 11/19 We are back in Red
Lake. The old snow blower didn't miss a beat
cleaning up the foot of snow that fell while we were
away. Ryan is now at the Chicago All Canada sport show. This past summer we sent in a photo of our airplane and it was selected to be in the Cessna Owners Association Calendar for August. |
|
||||
January 17/19 Ryan is at the All
Canada sport show in Green Bay starting today and
ending on Sunday. |
See the coupon above for discount price on tickets |
||||
January 19/19 The photo at right
is our thermometer this morning. It reads a
little low. The actual temperature is only 31 below
(Fahrenheit) |
|
||||
January 31/19 The sport shows
are over and Ryan is back in Thunder Bay.
Louise and I are here in Red Lake trying to get
through the current deep freeze. The block
heater on our Suburban picked this time to quit
working. It was a bit of a challenge to
warm the engine so it would start without the block
heater but we got it done and the block heater
replaced. For people living south of Minneapolis
this link may help https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Block_heater |
Rather than continue posting pictures of winter we
have decided to institute "Throw back
Thursdays". Just a little medicine to help you
get through the rest of the winter. This sunset
photo was taken at Goose Lake and according to the
metadata it was May 30/2014 at 9:25 p.m. |
||||
February 7/19 The photo at
right is quite old (pre 2012). Joe C. at
Unnamed lake with a 39 inch Northern. Monroe and Unnamed traditionally produce our largest Northerns. |
|
||||
Feb 14/19 For this throwback
Thursday we looked back to Monroe Lake in 2008.
Monroe has traditionally been a great lake for big
Northerns. Many large Northerns have been
caught right from or within sight of the dock. |
|
||||
Feb 21/19 Ron and Kathy have
been fishing at our outpost on Poirier Lake for many
years and they never fail to catch lots of big
Walleye. Kathy manages to get the biggest almost
every year. Of course she has a great guide. |
|
||||
Feb 23/19 Ryan is back in
Thunder Bay after a visit to Florida and the Daytona
500.One guess what Ryan did while in Florida. |
|
||||
Feb 25/19 Louise has found some
interesting fishing quotes on the internet and we
would like to share a few. #1 |
#2 |
||||
Feb 28/19 Another throwback
Thursday and fishing quote #2 with a few photos
to go along with the quote. Julie and Scott D. Frances and Peter V. Sarah and Frank W. The list is not all inclusive and we do have a few daughters who teach their dads how to fish. |
|
||||
|
|||||
March 7/19 Another throwback
Thursday with fishing quote #3 |
|
||||
The throwback this week goes to
Whitelaw Lake in 2008 when Gary N caught this 30 inch
Walleye. The biggest Walleye ever photographed
at Whitelaw Lake was actually 31.5 inches.
Gary caught this nice Walleye in a little bay
off the river channel that leaves Whitelaw at the
north end. The 31.5 incher was caught in
the deep water just past the island in front of the
cabin. |
|
||||
March 14/19 Fishing quote
#4 and to go along with the theme from 2 weeks ago. Joe is really enjoying taking his grandson Andrew fishing. |
|
||||
March 21/19 The throwback this
week goes to 2004 when Dale S caught this 44 inch
Northern in U Lake (the portage lake south of Monroe
Lake). |
|
||||
March 29/19 This week our
throwback is a photo of our son Scott and his
family (Lori, Cameron and Annadele) when they
visited us at camp this summer. As some of
you may know Scott was diagnosed with brain cancer in
January 2017. Sadly, we lost Scott on March
21/19. Now our efforts are focused on Lori
and the kids. |
|
||||
April 5/19 This weeks
throwback goes to July 4/2003 when a twister passed
across south bay on Goose Lake. Please
see http://www.loonhaunt.com/Twister |
|
||||
April 11/19 Fishing quote #5. The wise ones know it isn't just about the fishing. Mostly, it's about family and friends. |
|
||||
April 18/19 We are back in Red
Lake. The snow is melting rapidly. The
lake ice is still about 4 feet thick. We are
working on the information packages. The West End
Store has closed and the remaining stores are looking
at shopping and delivery charges of about $50 per
order. We are looking into other options.
|
|
||||
April 22/19 Afternoon
temperatures in the mid sixties for the past couple of
days. The ice is melting fast. Our
airplane is ready to go. We will probably fly
off by the end of the week. On the grocery front A1foods in Ear Falls is eager to fill grocery orders. The problem is they are in Ear Falls (40 miles south of Red Lake) and people will have to pick up their groceries at the store on the way through Ear Falls. Not a solution for everyone but it should work for some. |
|
||||
April 25/19 Louise and I
traveled to Ear Falls yesterday to visit
A1Foods. When you stop to pick up your
grocery order check out the bakery items and the meat
counter. They have at least 4 different kinds of
Smokies as well as Pepperettes and a nice selection of
sliced meats. |
I know we should have a picture here
but I forgot to get one. How about a nice fish picture instead. |
||||
April 28/19 Spring is here. Ryan
and Steve are fishing the rivers that flow into Lake
Superior along the north shore. We are now looking at a week of cool temperatures so the airplane can stay on the ice for a while longer. |
|
||||
April 29/19 As you can see in
the photo our little bay is still frozen solid.
It looks like the geese didn't get the message about
the ice. |
|
||||
May 5/19 We flew the airplane
off the ice and landed in the river. Several others
did the same thing. The ice is melting well on lakes
to the west of Red Lake but it is still slow going for
lakes east of Red Lake. |
|
||||
May 6/19 Louise and I did a
quick shopping trip to Kenora today. On the way
back we took this photo at the park on Perrault Lake. The ice along the shore is melting but it is still quite white in the middle. |
|
||||
May 10/19 The ice in Howey Bay
is still holding on. Monroe and Unnamed are open
water. The lakes east of Red Lake are still
mostly ice covered. Our bay is ice free but there is
still lots of ice just outside of our bay. |
|
||||
May 14/19 Ryan and Bill flew to Goose
Lake to pick up tools and jacks to level the cabin at
Unnamed Lake. No surprises at Goose Lake.
The first order of business was getting the floating
dock back in place. The ice left Howey Bay last night.
|
|
||||
May 19 The cabin at Unnamed not only
had to be leveled but it also had to be lifted about
10 inches. The job required 2 Jackalls and 10
hydraulic jacks from 4 to 20 tons. |
|
||||
May 21/19 Louise, Ryan and Bill
finished up at Unnamed lake today. The cabin and the
fish are all ready for the first fishermen on
Sunday. From this photo you can see how much the
cabin was lifted. |
|
||||
May 22/19 We arrived at Goose
Lake this afternoon. All is right with the
world. |
|
||||
May 23/19 Today we spent all day
getting Whitelaw ready for the first guests arriving
on Saturday. |
|
||||
May 24/19 The projects are
getting done fast and furious. We cover the
lower windows to prevent damage by bears. This
season we had a partridge fly through one of the upper
windows. Fortunately we have spare panes of
glass on hand. The partridge came through the
pane on the left. The dead bird only made it
about 10 feet into the cabin but glass shards made it
30 feet all the way across the cabin. |
|
||||
May 25/19 The first load of
minnows for 2019. Yes, the pants are dirty they
made it into the washing machine 30 minutes after this
photo was taken. |
|
||||
May 26/19 We move the boats from
winter storage to the boat ramps. Once again the little Kubota makes life much easier. |
|
||||
Once the boat is in the water we
install the motor, the battery, the seats, the paddles
and the anchor. The winch that was designed to
save an old back works just as well for a young back. |
|
||||
May 27/19 The Geese are back at
Goose. |
|
||||
May 28/19 Louise and Ryan went
to Woman Falls to get some Walleye for supper and Ryan
landed this nice Northern. |
|
||||
May 29/19 The pictures are in
from the first group at Monroe Lake. See more
photos in photo gallery at top of page. |
|
||||
May 30/19 Very windy
yesterday. Calm conditions today so we traveled
to Poirier Lake to get it ready and we got
the boats at Nechigona ready for the guests arriving
this weekend. |
|
||||
May 31/19 There is a forest fire
40 miles west of us at Pikangikum. We have
not even had any smoke here but our telephone service
is through Pikangikum so we have no telephone service
right now. Please contact us by email. As
you can see the sky is clear and we are ready for the
first guests arriving Sunday morning. |
|
||||
June 4/19 The fishing is fast
and furious in about 8 feet of water both at the Honey
Hole and Coon Ass Point. |
|
||||
D day/19 Coon Ass Point is
also a great place for Northerns. This 42
incher was caught this morning. |
|
||||
June 7/19 Lots of Walleye
action today. The largest was 27 inches. Our
telephone access is back. 807-773-5564 |
|
||||
June 9/19 We picked up
Troy and Pam today at Monroe Lake. They caught a
42 inch Northern in U Lake and a 31.5 inch Walleye in
the little lake east of Monroe. This is the
little dark water lake that is separated from Monroe
by a beaver dam. You have to pull the boat over
the beaver dam. |
They didn't even have a camera. |
||||
June 10/19 The heat wave is
over. We had some long overdue rain and the
fires should be under control. Nice sunshine but
temperatures in the sixties. Walleye fishing is
great in North Bay. |
|
||||
June 12/19 Once again Deb is
showing the guys at Unnamed Lake how to catch the big
ones. (28 inch Walleye) |
|
||||
June 16/19 Would you believe the
Walleye are on the Wall already? Great action
down as far as Gas Can Rock in 10 to 12 feet of
water. This beauty was caught just around the
corner from camp. |
|
||||
June 17/19 A message from Scott
who left Monroe Lake yesterday. We can't thank you enough for another fantastic
trip. Some numbers for the week Monroe. 1029 fish
caught. Pike 31 in 32 in 35 in 36 in. Multiple walleye
at 21 in. 31 in Pike clamped onto walleye netted them
both.
Lane and Brian are already talking about what to
bring and not bring on their next trip. So they're
hooked, and will be back.
Thanks for bringing in the case of beer during the
midweek flight check. Much appreciated.
|
|
||||
June 17/19 continued. The
walleyes are everywhere here at Goose Lake. |
|
||||
|
|||||
June 18/19 Yes, the beer truck
does deliver at Goose Lake. |
|
||||
June 19/19 Today we had our
first fish fry on the new deck. The third 28
inch Walleye for the week caught today. |
|
||||
June 20/19 The weather is still
fantastic. Warm but not hot with light winds
each day. At right is one of the 28 inch Walleye
caught this week. This one was right in the fast
water below White Dog Falls. |
|
||||
June 28/19 A little cool
early in the week with a few thunderstorms. The
Walleye have moved a little deeper 10-12 feet
but are still in the Honey Hole. Good action in
the central part of the lake and along the wall to Gas
Can rock. Warmer weather for the end of the week
and early next week. The photo at right is the
new look of our fish fry location. We will
install steel roofing in about 10 days. |
|
||||
June 28/19 The big Walleye just
keep coming. Nic took the money for big Walleye
and big Northern today. |
|
||||
June 28/19 Like I said the big
Walleye and the big Northern |
|
||||
June 30/19 Great change over this
morning (as usual). The crew coming in got their
groceries from A1 Foods in Ear Falls and they were
very pleased. Don't hesitate to order groceries
from A1 Foods they do a great job. Photo at right is a Monroe Lake sunset. |
|
||||
July 1/19 Our telephone is out
again. If you need to reach us please
email. The fish are still biting. The big
Walleye are still being caught. We can also be reached on our Vonage phone 204-480-8533 |
|
||||
July2/19 Check out this great
sunset and Lady Slipper. More photos from
cabin 4 (the sunset cabin) at our photos site. |
|
||||
July 3/19 Another enjoyable morning of
fishing with an afternoon fish fry. The largest
Walleye this morning was 25 inches. |
|
||||
July 6/19 The Walleye fishing is
terrific across from the Wall between the marker and
the end of the point. (3 days of west
wind) Ryan built a new fire enclosure for the shore lunch island and it works great. |
|
||||
July 7/19 There were several
nice Northerns caught this week. Our telephone service is back up and running. 807-773-5564 We have smoke in the air and our phone service goes in and out from forest fires west of us. |
|
||||
July 9/19 The much needed rain
arrived today. We have over 2 inches so far and
expect more for the next 2 days. This should be
the end of the fires. |
|||||
July 14/19 The fire got the out
house, the shed and the portage boat at Unnamed
Lake. The cabin is just fine. We
built a new out house, we will bring in a
replacement portage boat next week and we will replace
the shed later this summer. The fires are out. There
is a post fire mop up going on but we should be back
fishing at Unnamed next week. |
The cabin post fire. The shed post fire. |
||||
July 17/19 Jon and Kathy arrived
at Unnamed Lake this afternoon. Pictures of big
Northerns are sure to follow. At Goose Lake Walleye fishing continues to be as usual. Lots of fish and lots of 20-25 inchers caught and released each day. Everyone has their favorite spot. The Honey Hole as always but also around the deeper water at 15-18 feet. |
It is never too early to teach a youngster how to fillet fish. |
||||
July 20/19 The weather is a
little cooler today but the fishing is HOT.
Several guests remarked that today was the best day of
fishing they ever had. The photo at right is a
26 1/2 inch Walleye at the Honey Hole. YES,
hundreds of nice Walleyes every day in JULY. |
|
||||
July 23/19 The new guys at
Monroe Lake really take advantage of the deck.
The Monroe cabin is on a very small island which makes
an almost bug free location. Combined with
plentiful Walleyes and a very good chance at at large
Northern makes Monroe a great choice for a fishing
trip. |
|
||||
July 26/19 Family time is here
and Louise and Bill will actually do some fishing with
the grand kids. Lori, Cam and Addie
arrived today. |
Lori, Addie and Louise in the girls boat. |
||||
July 31/19 Cam caught a 32 inch
Northern below Whitedog Falls. |
|
||||
August 5/19 Chris and Sam are
having a great time fishing for Walleye at the Honey
Hole. |
|
||||
August 7/19 The group arrived
this evening. They hit the lake and the second
fish caught was this 28 inch Walleye. (on the
wall) |
|
||||
August 9/19 The rain that ended
the fire at Unnamed Lake fell on July 9 and 10.
People have been asking what it will be like next year
I tell them GREEN. This photo was taken August 7
at Unnamed Lake. Mother Nature knows what she is
doing. |
|
||||
August 13/19 Ryan and Bill are
working on building a new shed at Unnamed Lake.
This photo at noon on the first day. The next
photo at quitting time. |
|
||||
August 14/19 Today they
managed to get the ridge pole up, the rafters in place
and the roof sheathed with plywood. |
|
||||
August 15/19 Today was roofing
and building shelves inside. At quitting time
the guys were beat and forgot to take a
picture. They did manage to haul in boards and
beams to build the new walkway. All during this
rebuild Mark and Mike are having great Walleye fishing
at Unnamed Lake. Fast action and big Walleyes to
23 inches so far. Thanks to Mark for
the picture. A big thank you to Ron and his grandsons for unloading the lumber for the shed. |
|
||||
August 19/19 Back at Goose Lake
we have a full camp this week and Walleye fishing has
lots of action and some big ones mixed in. For the first time this year a group ventured to the north end of Nechigona Lake and were rewarded with this 27 inch Walleye. |
|
||||
August 21/19 The fishing at
Nechigona both below the falls and out in the the
channel continues to be fantastic. |
|
||||
August 25/19 Once again it is
family time and we get to go fishing with our
granddaughter JB. |
|
||||
August 30 We worked until
midnight last night installing the new faster
satellite internet. The action on the lake
continued fast for Chris and Jason. They caught
a total of 181 fish between the 2 of them today.
The largest was this 26 inch Walleye caught at Bunny
Ear Island. They found the best results with
frozen shiner minnows. |
|
||||
September 3/19 The weather has
really cooled. One night in the thirties but usually
in the forties. Sixties during the day.
The Walleye are fairly deep in Goose Lake but still
very shallow in the channel at Nechigona Lake.
Everyone is using their favorite bait. Minnows,
crawlers, frozen shiners and lures. |
|
||||
September 7/19 Ryan and Steve
put in a good day at Unnamed Lake. Check out the
paint job on the new shed. |
|
||||
September 10/19 Yes, we are
still here and the fishing is still hot even though
the weather has cooled. (mid fifties
today). Check out this 26 inch Walleye caught at
the north end of Nechigona Lake. |
|
||||
September 12/19 The forecast for
next week puts highs in the upper seventies but we are
not taking any chances and laying in a good stock of
firewood. (This is actually firewood for next
year) |
|
||||
September 13-20/19 We spent the
week getting the outposts shut down. Monroe
still has guests so it will have to wait. The
last group of fishermen left Goose Lake on September
14 (one day later than planned due to weather). |
|
||||
September 21-29/19 A week of
Moose hunting. The weather was much too
warm. The mosquitoes bothered us all the time
while we were in the bush even late in the
evening. The hunters, Barry and Mike spent many
hours along with Ryan and Bill calling for
Moose. It was a totally fruitless 8 days. The
moose simply were not there. A stark contrast to
the preceding 2 years. |
|
||||
October 2/19 We finished up at
Goose Lake today and flew to town. The photo at
right taken 2 days before departure. |
|
||||
October 3/19 Today we flew to
Monroe Lake to shut it down for the
season. It was great to have a couple of
nice days to complete the seasonal shut down. |
|
||||
November 4/19 Our bay finally
froze over for the last time during the
night. Very cold weather is forecast so it
should stay frozen this time. |
|
||||
November 12/19 This photo taken
from Superior Airways shows Howey Bay just recently
frozen over. |
|
||||
November 25/19 Not much
happening in Red Lake. The lake is frozen over
and has a little snow on it. The weather is below freezing at night but almost melting each day. Louise and our daughter Kari have been working on Tremolo 19 and it is online. |
Tremolo 19 is available online. Please click here |
||||
November 27/19 Thanksgiving is
tomorrow Best wishes for an enjoyable time with family. Bill, Louise and Ryan |
|
||||
December 11/19 We are back in
Red Lake after spending some time in Massachusetts
visiting family. We flew from International
Falls Minnesota and when we returned the weather was
very cold. Well below zero. While away we
heard a Minnesota story. See frame to right. |
It appears there was a serious disaster
in Minnesota and a lot of Minnesotans arrived in hell at
the same time. The devil decided to open a
Minnesota only section of hell to handle the big influx.
After some time the devil decided to visit the Minnesota
section and he was very disturbed to see the Minnesotans
were not suffering. He stopped a man who told him
it was so cold in Minnesota everyone was really enjoying
the heat. Since no one is supposed to enjoy
hell the devil decided to turn off the heat and let
these people suffer in the cold. Some
time later the devil checked on the Minnesota
section of hell and the whole place was one big
party. The devil stopped the same guy again and
asked how can you be enjoying this? The man
responded. As soon as hell froze over we realized the Vikings are going to win the Super Bowl. |
||||
December 25/19 Merry
Christmas to all. We hope you are enjoying this
holiday season. Bill, Louise and Ryan |
|||||
December 26/19 Sherm sent an
